These are the Islands of The Bahamas. From the air, they look like a necklace of uncut gems, carelessly cast upon a multicoloured sea.
Come a little closer and discover the pastel homes and picket fences of the Out Islands, the endless stretches of flawless white sand lapped by warm, clear waters in every shade blue and green, the peaceful rocking of a boat at anchor in a quiet cove and the rich history of a country discovered by Columbus more than 500 years ago.
Come along with us on a stunning 27-page photo tour of these spectacular islands. (top)

features
An exclusive essay uncovers the real Axel Wenner-Gren, the wealthy Swedish industrialist who was accused of hiding U-boats in the canals of Paradise Island during World War II.
Crawfish generate millions of dollars for the economy each year as they are exported around the globe. The Handbook looks at this flourishing industry.
Geography and history have combined to create a growing Haitian community in The Bahamas. What can the government do to stem illegal migration, and how are the Haitians who are here legally adapting to life in their adopted country? The Handbook finds out. (top)

history
It is arguably the most closely guarded street in Nassau, and one of the prettiest. Queen St, home to the American Embassy and its platoon of round-the-clock guards, is also a quiet residential oasis of quaint cottages, stately homes and interesting characters.
Just a handful of people live on Long Cay in the southeastern Bahamas, but it wasn't always that way. Little more than a century ago the tiny island rivalled Nassau in importance, with a population of 1,500, an impressive church and a thriving shipping industry. The Handbook takes a look at what happened to Long Cay, and what the future might hold. (top)

family islands
Nobody knows exactly how or when they arrived, but one thing is certain: If not for the passion of one woman, the wild horses of Abaco would likely be on their way to extinction today.
Coral reefs, those ethereal underwater worlds that thrill divers and snorkellers, are also the lifeblood of The Bahamas. The Handbook looks at how they are crucial to the very existence of the islands, and what must be done to preserve them for the future. (top)

business
They have built empires out of the sun, sea and sand. Learn about the daring businessmen who have invested millions of dollars in The Bahamas and put it back on the map as a coveted tourist destination.
The Bahamas financial services sector is stronger than ever following what could have been a disastrous blacklisting by the world's industrialized countries.
If The Bahamas is truly tax-free, just how does government make enough money to run the country? The Handbook looks at the structure of the Bahamian economy, and at the challenges that lie ahead. (top)

grand bahama
Two Freeport adventurers, not content to while away their days in the sun, test their mettle - one on the highest peaks of the world and the other in the great depths of the ocean.
Hutchison Whampoa, the giant Hong Kong conglomerate, is helping to transform Grand Bahama. The Handbook takes a look at the history of this influential company and its massive investment in The Bahamas.
They may not be as well known as Freeport and Lucaya, but the sleepy settlements that make up the rest of Grand Bahama are rich in culture and history. (top)

government
Find out how the government works and meet the people who run the country.
Everyone from the Governor-General and Prime Minister to Ambassadors, Parliamentary Secretaries and Honorary Consuls is listed here, along with office locations and phone numbers.
Detailed maps take the guesswork out of where to find government offices, departments and public utilities. (top)

blue pages
Information on everything – from the cost of living and agriculture to voting, the constitution and wildlife preserves – can be found in the blue pages. These sections of the Handbook – one for Nassau and The Bahamas, and one relating just to Freeport/Lucaya – are more than 200 pages in total and contain the most current, comprehensive and concise data available on living, travelling and investing in The Bahamas. It's all compiled in an encyclopaedic format for quick and easy reference. (top)

topEditorial Review

2002 Bahamas Handbook is entertaining and informative
Whether you are interested in cruising the Exumas or opening an offshore bank account, the 672-page Bahamas Handbook contains a bounty of information about the exclusive chain of islands located off the east coast of Florida. Blue pages offer important information and vital statistics about the country – everything from a history of the place to foreign investment incentives to import entry rules – in a concise format. The rest of the book is broken up into sections on Business, History, Family Islands, Government and Freeport/Lucaya, but this is not a dry tome. Instead, the book is filled with engaging stories that bring The Bahamas, past and present, to life for the armchair traveller as well as anybody considering a move or vacation to the islands. The photography is original and colourful and gives a true sense of the tropical splendour of the place. All in all, a beautifully illustrated annual handbook that both educates and entertains the reader – a rare commodity in today’s publishing world! Hats off to Etienne Dupuch Jr Publications!

I wish to thank and commend you for what I consider the best Bahamas Handbook ever, that of 2002.

The feature, historical, and Family Island stories were superb and of course, as always, the business and government sections.

It may interest you to know that for years I have purchased two copies at Christmas time for my two sons. This year I doubled the number, additional ones going to friends.

Keep up the good work.
Mr. Patrick J. Bethel, SCV, Marsh Harbour, Abaco
