features
The lead story on Sir John Templeton examines this billionaire and philanthropist’s unorthodox approach to religion and science, a philosophy that has surprising implications for transcending the boundaries of traditional spirituality.
Nassau’s Chinese community began with seven immigrants and has grown to hundreds, representing an integral part of the Bahamian mosaic. Today’s Chinese-Bahamians are among the business owners and professionals who run the engine of the Bahamian economy.
As a lawyer and politician, Eugene Dupuch’s influence went much further than the courtroom and House of Assembly. He was a pivotal figure in developing the modern constitution and helping to end racial discrimination in The Bahamas. (top)

history
A story on Cumberland Street explores the history of what was once the main thoroughfare connecting Fort Nassau to Government House. Rogues and royalty, vagabonds and viscounts have all been part of the fabric of this historic street.
William Wylly was an extraordinary man who brought a new philosophy to slavery. His revolutionary approach to the treatment of slaves got him into hot water, and even into jail. The Clifton Plantation, where Wylly settled, is today a subject of deep divide between Bahamians and developers, and has been set aside by government as a historical site.
The first action of World War II gave rise to a tale of daring wartime rescue on the high seas with a Bahamian connection. An unarmed ocean liner, the Athenia, is torpedoed by a German U-boat and sinks into the cold Atlantic ocean as crew members aboard Axel Wenner-Gren’s Southern Cross struggle in the dark to save the passengers from certain death. In all, 395 passengers were plucked from the sea. More than 118 people died. Read this fascinating first-hand account of the tragedy from the perspective of the third engineer aboard the Southern Cross. (top)

family islands
For those fortunate enough to live in the Out Islands, the minor inconvenience of being away from the city is a small price to pay for a stress-free life in paradise, where the only traffic jams take place in the harbour.
The Out Island homes of the very wealthy and very lucky range from rustic retreats to lavish palaces. Private islands with elegant mansions, fishing retreats and family getaways are all part of the landscape. The islands offer a valuable commodity for those who can afford it – complete seclusion. For many, it’s well worth the price. (top)

business
The finance, e-commerce and tourism industries are taking a new tack to target upscale markets. The provision of high-quality products and services is the key to rebuilding a robust Bahamian economy.
The Handbook takes a critical look at an innovative new product. The SMART fund is designed to take the financial sector to new heights.
The Bahamas is facing a myriad of opportunities and difficulties in its quest to become a centre of excellence for electronic business.
Tourism in The Bahamas is set to grow again with the expansion of Atlantis by Kerzner International and with a myriad of construction projects on the drawing board and in various stages of completion.
With these and other stories – including a look at commercial and residential real estate developments in Nassau and beyond – the Handbook gives readers keen insight into the world of business in The Bahamas that is unmatched by any other publication. (top)

grand bahama
Meet Willie Moss, the woman at the helm of the Grand Bahama Port Authority, who proves that hard work and dedication are the keys to success.
Francis Singer-Hayward, another extraordinary Freeporter, is devoted to animals and the arts. Her tireless efforts to make sure both get the attention they need do not go unnoticed.
Grand Bahama is in a unique position as an economy on the threshold of a “golden era.” The combination of creative solutions to strengthen the economy and hefty new projects in the works is expected to set the stage for long-term sustained development.
Also in the Handbook, you’ll find important information on commercial and residential real estate developments on Grand Bahama. (top)

government
From the Prime Minister and Cabinet to the Members of Parliament, the Government section gives readers complete information on the people in power, including public service officials, ambassadors, diplomatic and consular representatives, honorary consuls and international organizations and representatives. Detailed locator maps make it easy to find government offices in Nassau. (top)

blue pages
Since 1960 the Bahamas Handbook has remained the most comprehensive and reliable source on The Bahamas available anywhere. The Blue Pages sections, one for Nassau and The Bahamas in general and one for Grand Bahama, provide useful information in an encyclopaedic format for easy reference. Whether you’re a yachter searching for the nearest port of entry, a newcomer who wants information about immigration, an entrepreneur interested in starting a new venture or a student researching the history of The Bahamas, the Blue Pages section contains all the information you need. topEditorial Review

The 2004 Bahamas Handbook is a delightful blend of spectacular photographs and exciting feature stories. The stunning front colour section sets the stage for the wonderful read to follow. The features section begins with a thought-provoking look at Sir John Templeton, a wealthy Lyford Cay resident who has unconventional ideas about religion and science. Next comes a profile of Nassau’s industrious Chinese community and another of Eugene Dupuch, a lawyer and politician who helped shape The Bahamas. The history section begins with a delightful story on Cumberland Street and the colourful characters and buildings that make up its past. A timely account of William Wylly and the plantation that has become the subject of recent controversy follows. The section closes with a fascinating tale of the late-night rescue of passengers from a sinking ship. As always, the Freeport/Lucaya and family islands sections contain stories exclusive to Grand Bahama and the islands. The business section covers the challenges of an increasingly global economy, strategies for capturing the high-end investor and new products to help the financial services sector become more competitive. The blue pages information sections are, as always, up-to-date and chock-full of useful and interesting facts about The Bahamas. The Handbook gets better every year, and the 2004 edition is no exception.

I wish to thank and commend you for what I consider the best Bahamas Handbook ever, that of 2002.

The feature, historical, and Family Island stories were superb and of course, as always, the business and government sections.

It may interest you to know that for years I have purchased two copies at Christmas time for my two sons. This year I doubled the number, additional ones going to friends.

Keep up the good work.
