Take a colourful journey through the islands of The Bahamas. This collection of photographs showcases, in stunning detail, the beauty of the islands and their people. Drink in the blazing colours of crimson, orange, yellow and purple flowers, the vivid blue-green ocean, the warm amber light of an early morning on the beach, the stark white of a sun-drenched cottage and the soft pink of a graceful old building in the afternoon shadows. features
A troubled boy from the Out Islands becomes a Hollywood legend: Academy Award winner Sir Sidney Poitier.
Dynamic Bahamian Jewish community traces its roots back to the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492.
Scores of world-famous musicians, artists and writers have found relaxation and inspiration in the beauty of The Bahamas. (top)

history
A story on the plan to reinvent old Nassau and open up its historic waterfront to visitors outlines the government’s strategy to better compete in world tourism.
The Bahamas’ cruise industry has come a long way from its start in the mid-1800s. From cramped quarters and long journeys, to elegant suites and fine dining, cruise passengers now enjoy a level of service and luxury far beyond the wildest dreams of those first travellers.
From ales to jails, Parliament Street has contributed much to Nassau’s history. An afterthought, the road emerged out of necessity as buildings were erected, but soon became an important part of the city’s layout and culture. (top)

family islands
Sleepy Cat Island, with its turbulent past and reputation for the supernatural, is the ideal spot for a get-way-from-it-all holiday.
Top sailors and legendary boats are competing once again in the newly revived Miami to Nassau Ocean Race, the first of which took place in 1934. (top)
Abaco residents planned to break away from The Bahamas in the 1970s. Their plan to become a sovereign nation included armed revolution, if necessary. (top)

business
Sol Kerzner, Hotelier of the World, had good reason for choosing The Bahamas as the location for his spectacular Atlantis resort. This visionary man with an eye for the unconventional knows a good opportunity when he sees one.
More and more travellers are looking for a purpose to visit. The Bahamas is targetting these speciality markets in tourism and turning them into profits.
Hedge Funds are hot products for high-net worth investors and The Bahamas is taking advantage of this trend, offering intriguing options for those who qualify.
New foundations legislation is a milestone for the Bahamas financial services industry. It makes the country the first common law jurisdiction with legal provisions for foundations, stimulating growth for the sector.
With these and other stories – including a look at commercial and residential real estate developments in Nassau and beyond – the Handbook gives readers keen insight into the world of business in The Bahamas that is unmatched by any other publication. (top)

grand bahama
As with past editions, the Handbook recognizes the importance of Grand Bahama with a section devoted entirely to the island.
Major new projects, including an advanced movie studio and a huge resort, promise to transform the island.
Doug Silvera, a low-key character with a high-profile life, was a pioneer in the development of Freeport, from his first arrival on the island in 1951 to his role today as an integral part of Grand Bahama.
Lady Henrietta St George has helped hundreds of Grand Bahama's disadvantaged children realize their full potential.
The new Isle of Capri Casino is expected to provide a much-needed boost to Grand Bahama's economy. (top)

government
From the Prime Minister and Cabinet to the Members of Parliament, the Government section gives readers complete information on the people in power, including public service officials, ambassadors, diplomatic and consular representatives, honorary consuls and international organizations and representatives. Detailed locator maps make it easy to find government offices in Nassau. (top)

blue pages
Since 1950 the Bahamas Handbook has remained the most comprehensive and reliable source on The Bahamas available anywhere. The Blue Pages sections, one for Nassau and The Bahamas in general, and one for Grand Bahama, provide useful information in an encyclopaedic format for easy reference. Whether you're a yachter searching for the nearest port of entry, a newcomer who wants information about immigration, an entrepreneur interested in starting a new venture or a student researching the history of The Bahamas, the Blue Pages section contains the information you need. topEditorial Review

From start to finish, the 2005 Bahamas Handbook is a must-read. With gorgeous colour photography and engaging features, the book takes the reader on an exciting ride through the past, present and future of The Bahamas, stopping along the way to meet fascinating characters and learn about life in these beautiful islands. The first story, about actor Sir Sidney Poitier, paints a picture of a troubled Bahamian boy from the Out Islands who has achieved great things. A story on the Bahamian Jewish community illustrates how a group of foreign entrepreneurs wove their way into the fabric of Bahamian society. Another feature explains the attraction that The Bahamas holds for famous artists, musicians and writers who find their inspiration here. Historical views of downtown Nassau, the cruise industry and Parliament Street transport the reader back in time.

An exploration of Cat Island, with its ties to Obeah, provides a fascinating peek into a different world. An account of the revived Miami to Nassau Ocean Race and the story of a near-rebellion in Abaco round out the Family Islands section. The business section begins with a profile of South African hotelier Sol Kerzner, then takes a look at speciality markets in tourism, hedge funds and new foundations legislation. The Freeport/Lucaya section introduces the reader to two Freeport residents, Lady Henrietta St George and Doug Silvera, both of whom have contributed much to Grand Bahama. A look at the new Isle of Capri Casino and the business climate in Freeport give an overview of where the island stands and where it's going. The blue pages and government sections are, as always, accurate and useful, and full of fascinating information on the country and the people who run it. The 2005 Bahamas Handbook is a fine example of interesting features and useful facts all rolled into a gorgeous package.

I wish to thank and commend you for what I consider the best Bahamas Handbook ever, that of 2002.

The feature, historical, and Family Island stories were superb and of course, as always, the business and government sections.

It may interest you to know that for years I have purchased two copies at Christmas time for my two sons. This year I doubled the number, additional ones going to friends.

Keep up the good work.
